In English, the word "miss" covers a lot of ground. You miss your family. You missed the bus. Something is missing from the list. Thai doesn't work that way. Each context has its own word, and using the wrong one can change your meaning entirely.

Here are nine real Thai words for "miss," each with examples you can start using today.

1. คิดถึง (khít-thěueng) - Miss Someone Emotionally

This is the one most people learn first. Use it when you feel longing for a person or a place.

ฉันคิดถึงเธอ

chăn khít-thěueng ther

I miss her.

เขาคิดถึงบ้าน

khăo khít-thěueng bâan

He misses home.

2. พลาด (phlâat) - Miss an Event or Opportunity

You intended to do something, but it didn't happen. Think missed meetings, missed chances.

ฉันพลาดประชุม

chăn phlâat bprà-chum

I missed the meeting.

เขาพลาดโอกาสดีๆ

khăo phlâat oh-gàat dii-dii

He missed a good opportunity.

เธอพลาดรถเมล์

thoe plâat rót-may

She missed the bus.

3. ไม่ทัน (mâi-than) - Miss Because You Were Too Late

The emphasis is on timing. You arrived, but the moment had already passed.

ฉันไปเรียนไม่ทัน

chăn bpai rian mâi-than

I didn't make it to class on time.

เขาไม่ทันรถไฟ

khăo mâi-than rót-fai

4. ลืม (leuem) - Miss Because You Forgot

5. ขาดเรียน / ขาดงาน (khàat rian / khàat ngaan) - Be Absent

You weren't there. Use ขาดเรียน for school and ขาดงาน for work.
