Mastering the Thai Word “ยัง (yang)” – Four Essential Usages

When learning Thai, one small word can unlock many ways to express yourself naturally. The word ยัง (yang) is one of the most useful and common words you’ll hear every day in Thailand. In this lesson, you’ll learn the 4 main usages of “yang” with plenty of examples and practice exercises.

1. Asking “Have you … yet?”

In Thai, you can add ยัง (yang) at the end of a sentence to ask if someone has done something yet.

🔹 Structure: Verb + Object + ยัง ?

Examples (6):

1. กินข้าวยัง
   Gin khâao yang? – Have you eaten yet?
2. ทำการบ้านยัง
   Tham gaan-bâan yang? – Have you done your homework yet?
3. ดูหนังยัง
   Duu nǎng yang? – Have you watched the movie yet?
4. อ่านหนังสือยัง
   Àan năng-sǔe yang? – Have you read the book yet?
5. เขียนอีเมลยัง
   Khǐan ii-meeo yang? – Have you written the email yet?
6. ไปตลาดยัง
   Bpai dtà-làat yang? – Have you gone to the market yet?

2. Saying “Not yet” (ยังไม่…)

When you haven’t done something, simply use ยังไม่ (yang mâi …).

🔹 Structure: ยังไม่ + Verb

Examples (6):

1. ยังไม่กิน
   Yang mâi gin – Not yet eaten.
2. ยังไม่ทำการบ้าน
   Yang mâi tham gaan-bâan – Haven’t done homework yet.
3. ยังไม่ดูหนัง
   Yang mâi duu nǎng – Haven’t watched the movie yet.
4. ยังไม่ออกไป
   Yang mâi òrk bpai – Haven’t gone out yet.
5. ยังไม่นอน
   Yang mâi nawn – Haven’t slept yet.
6. ยังไม่โทรหาเพื่อน
   Yang mâi thoo hǎa phêuan – Haven’t called a friend yet.

3. Expressing “Still” (ยัง…)

You can also use ยัง (yang) at the beginning of the sentence to mean still.

🔹 Structure: ยัง + Verb / Adjective

Examples (6):

1. เขายังทำงาน
   Kháo yang tham-ngaan – He is still working.
2. ฝนยังตก
   Fǒn yang dtòk – It’s still raining.
3. ฉันยังหิว
   Chǎn yang hǐu – I’m still hungry.
4. รถยังไม่มา
   Rót yang mâi maa – The bus still hasn’t come.
5. เขายังอยู่ที่บ้าน
   Kháo yang yùu thîi bâan – He is still at home.
6. หนังยังไม่จบ
   Nǎng yang mâi jòp – The movie is still not finished.

4. Answering with “Not yet” (ยัง)

When someone asks you “…ยัง?”, you can answer simply with ยัง (yang) to mean not yet.

   A: ยัง (Yang) – Not yet.
2. Q: ทำการบ้านยัง (Tham gaan-bâan yang?)

3. Q: ดูหนังยัง (Duu nǎng yang?)
   A: ยัง (Yang) – Not yet.
4. Q: นอนยัง (Nawn yang?)
   A: ยัง (Yang) – Not yet.
5. Q: ไปตลาดยัง (Bpai dtà-làat yang?)
   A: ยัง (Yang) – Not yet.
6. Q: โทรหาแม่ยัง (Thoo hǎa mâe yang?)
   A: ยัง (Yang) – Not yet.
