Thai Listening Practice: Feeling Bored

Boredom hits everyone, even in paradise. This intermediate listening exercise uses a short monologue about what to do when you're feeling restless on Koh Samui. You'll hear natural Thai at a comfortable pace, with vocabulary around nature, daily routines, and the beach.

The real gold here is the conditional structure ถ้า... ก็จะ... (If... then...), which pops up three times in the passage. Once you get the hang of it, you can build dozens of your own sentences for everyday conversation.

Grammar Spotlight: ถ้า... ก็จะ...

This conditional structure is one of the most useful patterns in spoken Thai. It works like “If... then I will...” in English. The passage uses it three times, each describing a different activity at the beach:

ถ้าคลื่นไม่แรง ก็จะไปว่ายน้ำ

Thâa klêuun mâi raeng gâw-jà bpai wâai-náam

“If the waves aren't strong, I'll go swimming.”

ถ้าอากาศดี ก็จะนอนอาบแดด

Thâa aa-gàad dii gâw-jà nawn-àab-dàed

“If the weather is good, I'll sunbathe.”

ถ้ามากับเพื่อน ก็จะสั่งอาหารกินด้วยกันริมทะเล

Thâa maa gàb phêuan, gâw-jà sàng aa-hǎan gin dûay-gan rim tha-le

“If I come with friends, we'll order food by the sea.”

Try building your own sentences with this pattern. Start with ถ้า + a condition, then add ก็จะ+ what you would do. For example: ถ้าฝนตก ก็จะอยู่บ้าน (If it rains, I'll stay home).

Practice Tips

  • Watch the YouTube video once without reading the script. Focus on the overall flow. How many sentences can you pick out?
  • On a second listen, follow along with the romanization above. Pause after each sentence to repeat it out loud.
  • Try reading the Thai script on its own. Cover the romanization and see how much you can decode.
  • Write three of your own sentences using the ถ้า... ก็จะ... structure about your daily life.
